Sustainable Products at Ledgeway Farm

Did you watch the documentary “A Life on Our Planet” that was on Netflix and narrated by David Attenborough?

No? If, like me, your idea of a perfect evening is sipping a warm beverage while watching a very amazing documentary that teaches you plenty (don’t judge me! ), then you’ll definitely want to mark this one down on your calendar. (It’s possible that I’m just a “list” person as well).

The whole documentary is REALLY GOOD at reminding us the importance of global sustainability, but part of it talks about the de-forestation of the Rain Forest in order to plant Oil Palm trees. And this my friend,is what is on my mind.

Trees

In this blog, we’ll delve into the importance of sustainability, the positive outcomes of our products, and how small choices can make a big difference. Join us as we explore the world of goat milk soap, sustainability, and the incredible power of mindful choices.

Why Not Choose Palm Oil?

Palm Oil is used in just about EVERY product these days. It’s a lessor expensive ingredient that results in higher profit margins, so the demand for palm oil is high, but our global thinking is short-sighted.

Cutting down rainforests to create more room for Palm Oil planting is doing more harm than good. The negative snowball effect of living with fewer rainforests is alarming, and hopefully a growing concern to us. I know, I know, we’ve heard this before… and Mr. Attenborough is not the first to let us know – but wow – I really think we need to pay attention.

Palm Oil

When we started making goat milk soap on our farm in Maine some years ago, we made a very intentional decision that we would not use Palm Oil in our products. We knew this may mean higher prices for sustainable botanical ingredients. We knew that the efforts of our small farm may not result in immediate global change, but we also knew that it starts with ONE. ONE mindset changed, ONE action in the right direction, and ONE small effort combined with other ONE’s small efforts creates global change.

Importance of Sustainability

Sustainability is becoming a more important idea in the modern world as we realize how important it is to protect and keep our planet alive for future generations.

Nature

Conservation of Natural Resources

Sustainability urges people to use and save natural resources in a responsible way. It focuses on reducing waste, recycling materials, and using the concepts of a circular economy. By taking out as few resources as possible, we can ease the pressure on resources that are limited and move toward a more safe and fair future.

Ensuring Food Security

Sustainable agriculture techniques help make sure there is enough food by limiting soil degradation, protecting water resources, and using farming methods that help the soil grow back. By putting an emphasis on sustainable farming methods like organic farming and agroforestry, we can make sure that people in the future will have access to healthy food without using up all of the Earth’s natural resources.

Protecting Human Health

Sustainability isn’t just about protecting the earth; it’s also about making sure people and communities are healthy. Sustainable practices help improve people’s health by lowering pollution, promoting clean air and water, and keeping people from coming into contact with harmful chemicals as much as possible. Also, green transportation and urban planning can make towns healthier and easier to live in.

Conclusion

By avoiding Palm Oil, we ensure that our soap not only nurtures your skin but also helps protect delicate ecosystems. Why? Because we firmly believe that every decision we make as individuals and businesses can have a profound impact on the environment.

So, how can we do our part? Read labels, decrease the demand for ingredients or products that are not sustaining us globally, and be a part of a community that cares.  After all, I kind of like the rainforests and the benefits they give us to live well!
